The freshly brewed coffee smell in the morning is one of life’s small pleasures.
Not so pleasant? Dropping that cup of coffee on your carpet, especially if you have a wool carpet. The good news is that a reasonably fresh coffee stain can generally be removed from the carpet with a few items usually found in your kitchen.
Warning: You are going to use a lot of towels throughout this process. We recommend having some old bath towels on standby.
If the Coffee Stain is Fresh
For a fresh coffee spill, blot the stain first with towels to remove as much of the coffee as possible. Then sponge the stain with lukewarm water and blot dry. We recommend folding a bath towel into quarters, placing it on the stain, and standing on it to remove as much of the fresh coffee as possible.
To treat the remaining stain, or for a dried coffee stain, we suggest the following steps:
Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and apply to the stain. Blot the stain with a clean white towel. Continue until there is no further transfer to the towel.
Sponge the area with warm water and a little dishwashing detergent, then blot dry. This will usually help lift some of the stain, especially for milky coffee.
Sponge the area with cold water and blot dry. This process is designed to remove the remaining vinegar and any dishwashing detergent residue.
A good quality carpet stain remover will help lift the remaining stain. We recommend Electro 3 Carpet Stain Remover, as it is safe and very effective. Spray the stain and blot, following the instructions on the bottle.
If a stain is still visible, you may wish to use a steam iron over a thick towel to try to lift the stain. The heat from the iron will supercharge the stain remover and help transfer the stain to the towel (see our video blog).
NB: This final step should be completed with caution. The use of a steam iron may result in colour loss or colour leaching in some carpets.
