Why is it important to organise your fridge?

There are many reasons why organising your fridge is a great idea. Here are just a few of them

  • Less food waste, because you’ll be able to see exactly what you have, and food won’t perish prematurely

  • Will make meal planning and preparing things like school lunches and dinners simpler

  • Saves you cash because you won’t be doubling up on things when you shop

  • Having things compartmentalised could minimise the chances of contamination

4 Essential Fridge Organising Tips

Most of us just put food into the fridge with very little thought.

With a little time and effort, however, the inside of your fridge can both look great and be an extremely practical companion that’s going to make life so much easier.

It’s important to utilise the space in your fridge in the best possible way to both keep it healthy and highly organised. Let’s get started.

fridge cleaning tips

1. Clean everything out

Here’s the messy part. Pull absolutely everything out of the fridge, placing it on the kitchen bench or dining table.

As you go, throw out any expired items and separate things into categories as best you can to make the sorting and putting back process a little easier later on.

You may want to have a shopping list nearby so you can replace anything you throw out.

Take this opportunity to give your fridge a thorough clean as well, removing shelves and compartments if you can (and if you have the time!).

You can put any items you’re worried about being left out on the bench too long into the fridge – they won’t be in there long, but this will keep perishables fresh.

2. Create your zones

Zones is a term used by organising experts, which basically means categorising your storage areas into the sections which work best for you and your family.

With a young child at home, storing healthy snacks on the bottom shelf works best for my family, where she can just help herself when hunger strikes (and it does, often!).

Think about your life and how your fridge setup can work for you. If you work from home, maybe you need a section set aside for lunch inspiration. If dinners are always a rush to put together, you may need a section for cut-up vegetables to make quick meals a cinch.

Check out the fridge storage rules in the below section if you need a little direction on this.

3. Essential storage

Check out storage options at places such as Kmart or Big W, or even Howard’s Storage World.

You may need to do some measuring in your fridge to make sure whatever you buy is going to fit properly and not make life harder.

Long storage drawers are great for storing healthy snacks, and for your condiments, look into a turntable for an easy and practical way to get what you need out of your fridge when you need it.

You can even look into custom-made labels to brighten up your fridge and give it a personal touch.

4. Placing everything back

Once you’ve put your shelves and tubs back into the fridge, it’s time to restock. Take care while doing this step – care taken now will make things easier in the long run.

The neater things are, the more likely it is that you – and the rest of the family – will put things back where they belong in the future.

And now you’re done! If you have a little extra time up your sleeve, give the front of the fridge a quick wipe down as well, just to make everything look spic and span.

The Rules of Storing Food in The Fridge

Here are some common food items and how the experts say you should be storing them. Your fridge may not be designed to adhere to all of these but do your best!

  • Milk: Try to avoid storing this in the door, as it’s the warmest part of the fridge.

  • Raw meat: Keep on the bottom shelf in their tray to avoid any drips onto other food items.

  • Eggs: Use clear containers so you can see what you have left, and the expiry dates.

  • Fruits and Vegetables: Fruit can make your vegetables discolour and perish quicker, so don’t store them in the same compartment.

You also shouldn’t place hot food straight into your fridge, as it can increase the temperature inside the fridge and lead to food spoiling.

Be mindful of not overcrowding your fridge, as this can affect how well your fridge can circulate cool air. This could save you money on your electricity bill, too.

You’ll be amazed how much easier it is to keep your fridge clean once you’ve undergone the above process and have your fridge completely organised.

You’ll be able to see everything much clearer and keeping on top of expired items won’t feel like as much of a chore.

This is a great way to naturally freshen up your fridge when it’s due for a clean.
