It’s all fun and games until that soft drink spills on the carpet! Dark brown, sticky, and full of sugar—it's the perfect recipe for a stubborn stain.
So, what should you do if someone spills Coke on the carpet? Don’t stress! With some soda water and a clean cloth, you can tackle the stain with ease. Just remember, timing is key—acting quickly is essential. These steps are most effective on fresh spills, and an older stain may be trickier to remove.
Soda water
Clean white or colourfast towel, or paper towel
Warm water
Dishwashing liquid
Use a clean cloth or paper towel to soak up the Coke. Fold it over and press down with your heel or palm to apply pressure. Repeat until no more liquid is absorbed.
In my experiments at the Electrodry lab, this step removed most of the visible stain. However, because Coke is sticky and sugary, it’s important to continue with the next steps to prevent dirt from clinging to any residue.
Pour soda water onto a clean cloth and gently dab the affected area using a rolling motion. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing, as this can spread the stain. Continue dabbing until no more colour transfers onto the cloth or you’ve treated the entire stained area.
Mix a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid with 1 litre of warm water. Gently sponge the stain to dampen the carpet fibres, then blot dry by pressing down with a thick, absorbent cloth. The dishwashing liquid helps break down any remaining sugar residue, preventing the stain from reappearing.
If you have Electro 3 Spot and Stain Remover, you can use it instead for even better results. Simply spray the affected area, then wipe in one direction several times. Repeat the process, wiping in the opposite direction, to ensure thorough removal.
To prevent issues like watermarking during the stain removal process, dry the area quickly. Use a pedestal fan or fold a beach towel several times, place it over the stain, and weigh it down with a heavy book.
If all goes well, your carpet will be Coke-free! But if you're dealing with an old or stubborn stain, it might be time to call in the experts.
