There are two main types of carpet cleaning systems; hot water extraction cleaning which is often referred to as steam cleaning, and dry cleaning. Both carpet cleaning systems can achieve great results, but can also come with pitfalls. The following guide will help explain both carpet cleaning system and help you determine the best carpet cleaning system for you:
The Pre-Vacuum
A good carpet steam cleaner will vacuum the carpets prior to applying cleaning solutions to the carpet. This is important because vacuuming removes the dry soil from the carpet, which would otherwise turn into mud when mixed with water and become more difficult to remove.
Carpet Steam Cleaning Solution
A surfactant-based cleaning solution is applied to the carpet and should be agitated into the carpet fibres. A surfactant-based cleaning solution will reduce surface tension and allow water to penetrate more deeply into the carpet fibres to flush out the soil. Agitation should be via a mechanical rotary scrubber.
Injection and Extraction
As the final step, hot water is injected into the carpet under high pressure and extracted (vacuumed) away with the soil and foreign matter. A good steam cleaner will use 300 to 500 psi of pressure and perform a double pass over the carpet with a dry vacuum to remove as much moisture as possible.
Pre-Vacuum
A thorough pre-vacuum is an important first step to remove the dry soils and debris. Electrodry Melbourne uses a high-quality beater bar vacuum with a HEPA filter for our pre-vacuum.
Stain Pre-Treatment
Areas with heavy wear are treated are pre-treated with a dry-cleaning solution designed to dissolve heavy oily or greasy build-ups. This solution is agitated into the carpet fibres with a carpet rake or rotary brush.
The Carpet Dry Cleaning Solution
A carpet dry cleaning solution is applied to the carpet. This product should contain solvents which are similar to those used by your clothes dry cleaner, emulsified in water. The dry-cleaning solution should break down the oily soils in the carpet, releasing the dirt during the cleaning process. Electrodry's exclusive carpet dry cleaning solutions are made in-house and are considered the most effective in the market.
Both carpet cleaning systems are very effective if high-quality cleaning solutions are used, with the correct equipment, techniques and time. Steam cleaning may give better results on a carpet with very, very heavy levels of soiling, whilst dry cleaning can be more effective on a carpet with lots of staining. Electrodry offers a restorative clean, which is a combination of carpet steam cleaning and dry cleaning, which is ideal for the most heavily soiled carpets.
One of the biggest differences between these systems is drying times: Steam-cleaned carpets can take 4 to 24 hours to dry whilst dry-cleaned carpets are walk-on dry straight away and totally dry in 1 to 2 hours. Melbourne’s weather can be cold and damp which means carpet dry cleaning is usually the preferred carpet cleaning method.
The main difference between dry and steam cleaning is the amount of water used. Typically, steam cleaning uses between 10-50 litres, depending on room size. This results in wet carpets that could take up to 24 hours to dry, making your carpet vulnerable to germs and bacteria.
Electrodry’s unique dry cleaning process means walk-on dry carpets in just an hour or two.
This is made possible with specialised cleaning solutions that combine acidic and alkaline cleaning solutions to create heat and break up oily stains while releasing dirt from the fibres. Dirt and stains are lifted through this exothermic, or heat-creating, cleaning process to leave a superbly cleaned carpet without a chemical residue. Best of all NO WET CARPETS!
